Restless Legs Syndrome Walk Scheduled For 9.18.08
Dear friend,
I would like to discuss with you a condition that affects 10% of our
population- RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME. We have all heard of it but probably do not
realize the extent of its implications. It usually begins insidiously with rare
restless nights, feeling jittery in the arms and legs, and your spouse / bed
partner reporting random kicking while asleep. This condition often progresses
to an annoying frequency and the affected person tries stretching, massaging,
walking/running and finally consults a physician. Then there is the group that
are symptomatic 24/7 with RLS and normal life becomes impossible. These persons
find it impossible not to be in constant movement unless we are properly
medicated. This means no TV, reading a book, no church services, no full
night's sleep, etc. unless it is meticulously planned between medication doses.
There have been 2 drugs FDA approved on the market these last years and some
genetic studies seem promising.
The month of September is RLS Awareness month which is the main purpose of this
letter. Many people have RLS, albeit, different levels, and do not realize how
many others are just like them. Be attentive to those around you who may be
troubled by these symptoms and be willing to talk with them. There is much
information available on www.RLS.org.
Our national magazine is appropriately named "The Nightwalkers" and we are
asking those of you who could to join my husband and me for a "Twilight" walk
on September 18 at 6pm in Compton Park.(by Nachman Elementary).
For those of you who would , I am asking you to consider a donation to the RLS
Foundation for grants, educational materials, and someday, a cure.(1610 14th St.
